'HSMTMTS' Showrunner Teases Joshua Bassett & Sofia Wylie's Chemistry In Final Season: 'It's Unteachable'

The final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is just hours away at the time of writing this post.

In the new episodes, the long-awaited Rina ship is finally happening, and many fans are ecstatic at Ricky and Gina’s relationship.

During a recent interview about the upcoming season, showrunner Tim Federle teased Joshua Bassett and Sofia Wylie‘s chemistry as their characters, and credited it to their great friendship off-screen.

“They’re hit with challenges for sure. Many of them external,” Tim shared with Hollywood Life. “This is what I think about Ricky and Gina: they’re the right couple, and the question of the season is, but is this the right timing? Because on stage, as in life, timing is everything. That’s the fundamental question, but gosh, they’re really good for each other, and I just hope they can figure that out.”

Tim then shared that Joshua and Sofia‘s chemistry this season is “unteachable” and he can promise a duet between them!

“It’s unusual what they’ve got, and they’re such good friends,” he said. “They so hold each other up off camera that I think they just, again, [it’s] the miracle of 4 seasons, they’ve seen each other through ups and downs. I think they really trust each other on camera, so it’s a beautiful thing to watch. There’s some super swoony, romantic date night-y things coming up this season that I just can’t wait for the audience to see.”

Joshua also recently commented on their relationship on and off screen in a pre-strike conducted interview.

“It coincides with Sofia and I’s friendship — over the years we weren’t the closest for whatever reason, we just didn’t hang out often, but this season we’ve hung out all the time,” the actor and singer told EW. “It was so funny how in both Ricky and Gina’s timeline as a couple, but also in Sofia and I’s timeline as friends, there couldn’t have been a more perfect time for us to finally come together in this way. It’s been really cool to be able to see these characters in a healthy relationship, for the most part, and it’s not toxic and rocky.”

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series‘ fourth and final season premieres TONIGHT (August 9) at midnight, along with the soundtrack out the following day on August 10th.
