Rubble & Crew is making history for the PAW Patrol universe!
The spinoff series, centering on Rubble and his construction friends, featured the first ever non-binary character in the Nickelodeon franchise.
In a recent episode airing August 21st, viewers are introduced to a new resident in Builder Cove named River, who is a non-binary skateboarder and photography fanatic.

According to Pink News, “River takes an interest in photographing some of the building work completed by Rubble and the gang. When they share their hope of capturing a shooting star that’s expected that evening, Rubble’s team builds an observatory to help them.”
During the episode, River’s identity isn’t explicitly mentioned, but there are nods to their identity with their shoes and socks, being the colors of the Trans pride flag.
Non-binary writer, activist and content creator Lindz Amer was brought on to consult on the character and write the episode, and the dished on the experience on Instagram.
“They brought me on to consult on the first nonbinary character—meet River!!—for the PP universe and write their episode, talk about a bucket list item,” Lindz captioned their post. “I wanted to write a nonbinary character that was aspirational and incredibly cool, someone for the pups (and kids at home) to look up to. They found an awesome non-binary actor to voice River and I’m so so happy about how it turned out. Swipe to peep River’s 🏳️⚧️ kicks! 👟”
