The Hunger Games franchise is racing back to theaters before the end of the year with the release of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
While it features a new cast and tells a new story centered around Rachael Zegler, the original franchise’s director Francis Lawrence is back in action again.
In a recent interview, he spilled on something that he learned from the first movies, which helped him inform a decision they made this time around.

Speaking to People, Francis said that he wasn’t happy with the decision to split the final Hunger Games book into two movies.
“I totally regret it. I totally do. I’m not sure everybody does, but I definitely do,” he explained, adding that he understood why fans were frustrated with the creative choice.
This time around he said it was never even an option.
“I would never let them split the book in two,” he opined. “There was never a real conversation about it. It’s a long book, but we got so much s-it for splitting Mockingjay into two — from fans, from critics, from everybody — that I was like, ‘No way. I’ll just make a longer movie.’”
