'Descendants: The Rise of Red' Reveals Where Original Core Four Are Now, How They Pay Tribute to Cameron Boyce

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS!

Descendants: The Rise of Red is out now and bringing the franchise to a new generation!

The new movie musical, the fourth in the Descendants franchise, features an almost entirely new cast, with only two actors reprising their roles – Chine Anne McClain as Uma (who is now principal) and Melanie Paxson as the Fairy Godmother, helping in usher a new set of characters.

With the fourth movie out now on Disney+, it has been revealed where the original core four characters – Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Jay (Booboo Stewart) and Carlos (Cameron Boyce) – are in the story, including a touching tribute to the late Cameron Boyce‘s Carlos.

Keep reading to find out the spoilers…

In the beginning of Descendants: The Rise of Red, it is revealed that Queen Mal and King Ben are the ones who left Uma in charge at Auradon Prep. Uma shares that the royal couple are off on a sailing adventure, with Evie and Jay, to form alliances with distant lands, which seems to set up future possibilities for even more fairytale characters to join the franchise.

Then, while talking to Fairy Godmother about inviting Princess Red (Kylie Cantrall) from Wonderland to attend the school, Uma looks at a photo of Carlos and says, while tearing up, “It’s what Carlos would have wanted. So don’t do it for me, do it in honor of him.”

Without revealing what happened to Carlos, this seemingly nods to the character passing away.

The new movie focuses on the story of Red, the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, Cinderella’s perfectionist daughter. When the tyrannical Queen of Hearts incites a coup against Auradon, polar opposites Red and Chloe must join forces and travel back in time to undo the traumatic event that set Red’s mother down her villainous path.
