The third Ant-Man movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, hits theaters this weekend and there’s one character who is played by a different actress!
Cassie Lang, Scott’s (Paul Rudd) daughter, is being played by Kathryn Newton in the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5.
This marks the third actress to portray Cassie Lang, following Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrmann.
But why has the character been replaced with a new actress once again?
Keep reading to learn more…
In the first two movies, Abby played Cassandra (Cassie) as a child, but Ant-Man’s appearance in Avengers: Endgame required a five year time jump, therefore needing an older actress, which is where Emma comes in.
In Endgame, Cassie was about 17, and in Quantumania, she’s now only 18 years old, as confirmed by the director.
However, since the character is now a teen and practically, why couldn’t Emma reprise her role for the new Ant-Man movie?
Some believe that replacing her has to do with the fact that she only had a couple of scenes in Endgame, and now Cassie has a much bigger role in the MCU from now, moving forward.
Reports suggest that Marvel may have wanted a more experienced actress to take the reigns of the character who is destined to join the Young Avengers in the MCU at some point.
Emma has several projects under her belt prior to and post Endgame, but Kathryn has starred in some blockbuster movies at this point, including Freaky, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, Lady Bird, and Paranormal Activity 4, as well as having appeared on several TV shows, including Big Little Lies, Little Women, Supernatural and The Society.
While Marvel has not addressed the recasting, it is believed that the recasting simply had to do with star power and experience.
Kathryn recently noted that she has seen the first Ant-Man movies and loves them.
“Abby was so cute and joyful and just magical in both movies. So we thought about her a lot, especially in creating what she looks like now. We wanted her to stay brunette, so I had a seamless transition, and I was so excited to introduce this new phase of Cassie,” the actress told THR. “She still has that same spark of energy, that joy, that love and a big, big heart. So I hope that audiences feel it because that’s what I wanted to show.”
