We are getting to know Skyla I’Lece from the new series The Crossover!
The young actress stars in the Disney+ show as Alexis, a childhood friend who recently returned to town and is catching the eye of both Bell brothers.
Based on the book of the same name by Kwame Alexander, the new series centers on teen brothers Josh (Jalyn Hall) and Jordan (Amir O’Neil) Bell, widely considered basketball phenoms. Through his lyrical poetry, an adult version of Josh, aka Filthy (Daveed Diggs), narrates the story of he and his brother’s coming-of-age, on and off the court, as their former professional basketball player father adjusts to life after basketball and their mother finally pursues lifelong dreams of her own.
Ahead of the series premiere, we caught up with Skyla and learned 10 Fun Facts about her.

Check out what she shared with us below…
- 1. My training started on stage in musical theatre. From ages 6-12, I engaged in 15 or more hours of training in acting, voice, and dance at North Carolina Theater Conservatory after school and on the weekends.
- 2. I’ve been cast in musical theatre productions of The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins, Annie, and The Secret Garden, where I was nominated as “Best Actress in a Musical” by Broadway World for my role as Mary Lennox. This is when I discovered I can not only memorize hundreds of pages of my own lines, but I knew the lines of everyone else in the cast! My singing voice also reached new heights during that production. Soon after, I was cast as Baby June in Gypsy, for which I was nominated by Broadway World as “Best Featured Actress in a Musical.”
- 3. In the upcoming TV series, The Crossover based on Kwame Alexander’s book, I am playing the role of Alexis (Miss Sweet Tea). It’s a show for the entire family. I am very excited to bring this character to life in my first series regular TV role!
- 4. I spent my 16th birthday in New Orleans while filming The Crossover. My four aunts came in town and organized a beautiful party for me and the cast helped me celebrate. It was hot, stormy, and fun! A memorable event for sure.
- 5. I was raised to take academics very seriously. I am an honors student who takes multiple honors and AP courses. I study hard. I have an above 4.0 GPA in school. My favorite subject is math. I’m currently taking AP Calculus and it’s challenging, yet invigorating. I’m even a math tutor at my school. After high school, I plan to earn a university degree while simultaneously pursuing my acting and singing career.
- 6. I am a volleyball athlete. I’ve been in club volleyball for 4 years playing both MB and OH competitively.
- 7. I aspire to earn an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) one day! I love performing for TV and on the stage. And when I get the opportunity to sing while portraying a role, I’m in heaven! On any given day, you can find me singing along to Broadway tunes whether it’s Hamilton or Six The Musical.
- 8. At age 7, I was crowned National All American Miss Princess pageant Queen. I won runner up in North Carolina and got to compete at nationals in California where I was crowned. This was my first time ever visiting California, not knowing at the time that one day I would live here.
- 9. I love to cook and watch cooking shows. Some of my favorite dishes to prepare are deviled eggs, southern baked banana pudding, and eggs benedict.
- 10. I’ve traveled to Thailand, Malaysia, Dubai, British Virgin Island, England, France, and Belize. All of them were incredible experiences; however, if I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be Thailand because that is where I discovered my favorite fruit: Rambutan, which, to me, tastes like a very sweet grape.
