Tate McRae No Longer Eligible for Best New Artist at Grammys, Reason Why Revealed

Tate McRae can’t be nominated or win the Best New Artist category.

It was recently revealed that the almost 21-year-old singer is no longer eligible for said category at the upcoming 2025 Grammys.

Tate has had a breakout year in her career, with “Greedy” becoming her biggest debut on Spotify and reaching No 1 on both the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, as well as a peak of No 3 on the Billboard Hot 100!

So, with all of her success over the past year, why is she not eligible for Best New Artist?

“While there will be no specified maximum number of releases, the Screening Committee will be charged with determining whether the artist had attained a breakthrough or prominence prior to the eligibility year. Such a determination would result in disqualification,” the Grammys rules state.

While she may qualify based on the above, Tate is actually not eligible as she has already been submitted in the category three times, though not nominated, in the past. Once you have been submitted three times, you are automatically disqualified from submitting in that category again, even if you were never nominated.

However, it is likely she is eligible for several other categories, like Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Song of the Year and more.

Last year, Tate was nominated for several Juno Awards, which are similar to the Grammys but for the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Earlier this year, she won the Juno Awards for Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Greedy.”
