The stars of Descendants: The Rise of Red are dishing on the new Disney movie musical!

The fourth installment of the Descendants franchise just premiered on Disney Channel and JJJ caught up with a handful of the young stars of the movie.

Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Ruby Rose Turner, Dara Reneé and Morgan Dudley spoke to JJJ in an exclusive interview about continuing the legacy of the original films, having some iconic people as their royal parents and they even reacted to making Disney history with a fourth film in a DCOM franchise!

Check out what they shared with us inside…

JJJ: How does it feel to be making Disney history with the fourth movie in a DCOM franchise?

Malia Baker: Wow, I never thought about it from that perspective before. I guess we are the first fourth when it comes to…

Kylie Cantrall: Right, that’s like a new… yeah, it’s wild. I mean, it’s a crazy title to kind of take on our backs and get to say that we’re a part of the Descendants world. I think it’s something that my nine year old self would truly be freaking out at if she knew that this was my reality at the moment. So, super grateful and just excited.

MB: It feels like a dream. We all wanted to be Descendants when we were younger, so, being here now It’s such a reality. So, it’s so cool.

JJJ: Did you feel any pressure taking on the franchise from the original stars?

MB: Oh, absolutely. I mean, they’re so iconic, and like I said, we all looked up to them so so much that the concept of, you know, “Don’t touch the old ones, they’re so perfect,” it’s so true! It’s so prevalent, which I feel like is a great testament to what we did. We cared about it so much and we truly knew how much they meant because it meant so much to us, that we are those fans along with being in the movie.

KC: Like, “We can’t ruin this!”

MB: Literally!

KC: We can’t ruin the legacy. We’ve got one job!

JJJ: You have iconic people as your parents in the movie, the OG Cinderella and Charming, Brandy and Paolo Montalban, and Rita Ora. How was it having them playing your parents?

KC: I mean, mind-boggling is an understatement, because yeah, they’re iconic. Especially Brandy and Paolo coming back.

MB: Oh my gosh.

KC: It was one of those things where I was like, “No way, this is gonna make history!”

MB: Yeah, seriously.

KC: This is like such a big moment and especially, like, yeah, Brandy reprising her role that was so beloved and she made history at the time when that movie came out. So, to do it again is just really, really special.

MB: Totally. Let’s talk about Paolo for a second. Paolo is the… we are obsessed with Paolo!

KC: We love that man! If you need someone to hype you up…

MB: He is the best father figure ever! Even when we’re not filming, he’s like commenting on all my posts, being like, “You’re doing so great,” like, “You’re doing amazing.”

KC: I know, he’ll have like the most uplifting, supportive comment. I just love him.

MB: He’ll be like, “I can’t wait for the world to see you guys as being princesses. You’re already royalty in my eyes.” Stuff like that. It’s the most cutesy stuff ever. We’re just obsessed with the three of them. They are truly everything you want them to be and more.

JJJ: How does it feel to be making Disney history with a fourth movie?

Ruby Rose Turner: This is actually the first time that I’m really digesting that.

Dara Renee: Whoa, I didn’t even realize. That’s insane.

Morgan Dudley: I think it’s only natural we’re moving into Disney+ territory too, like, there’s a lot of changes within the channel itself and so it kind of feels like it’s on a natural momentum. I feel like, we can take a seat and kind of just let the audience decide how it’s gonna go. But, it definitely is really exciting. It’s a lot of excitement.

DR: It’s very exciting. A little nerve-wracking, ‘cause it’s already so…

RRT: A little?

DR: I mean, it’s such a huge part of so many childhoods, including our own. So, it’s just like, we want it to be perfect.

JJJ: Did you feel a lot of pressure to fill the shoes of the original cast?

MD: Yeah, absolutely.

RRT: I feel like it would be silly not to feel that pressure. You know? They’re so incredible and they did such a great job. They made the movies what they are. You know what I mean?

DR: Yeah, we would not be here today without them.

RRT: Of course there was pressure, for sure. Pressure and excitement, you know, as actors, that’s a fun part for us. Up for the challenge, for sure.

DR: And I’m also so grateful that the originals are the originals. You know what I mean? Like, nobody can touch them. That is what they were. They were my childhood, they’re so many other peoples childhoods, and they’ve made an impact. And, we’re coming in through Wonderland, so something completely, and Merlin Academy, because you just can’t touch the originals sometimes. I 100% agree with that. No shade to High School Musical because we did touch that!

MD: But you know, taking it and making it a new story. We’re making a new story to follow along to, so, I don’t know. You [Dara] were a lot of kids childhoods now and for something… It’s just completely different, but also so nostalgic.
